Q&A with with Guido von Vacano, Vice President at | Landesmesse Stuttgart GmbH

What is the importance of hy-fcell for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry?

hy-fcell is the most important annual event in North America relating to the latest developments in hydrogen and fuel cells. It provides an extensive overview of relevant international markets and technological advances. Visitors forge contacts and meet decision-makers at hy-fcell. The interactive format is an ideal platform for experts and newcomers to develop lasting business relationships.

Which criteria were decisive for the choice of the trade fair location Vancouver?

As the "cradle of the fuel cell" Vancouver plays an important role internationally in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry. Major companies in the industry have their sites here. As recently as June 2022, Vancouver's status as a fuel cell cluster was further strengthened with the opening of a new multi-million dollar cellentric manufacturing and research facility. cellentric was founded by Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group. The new facility in Burnaby, near Vancouver, will produce fuel cell systems for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Burnaby and Canada have unique expertise in this area. Vancouver is therefore the right place to bring together renowned international experts to advance the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology.

What is the connection between Germany and Canada in the field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology?

Canada and Germany are working closely together on sustainable energy: in August 2022, the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance was adopted, in which both countries commit to enabling investment in hydrogen projects, supporting the development of secure hydrogen supply chains; establishing a transatlantic Canada–Germany supply corridor; and exporting clean Canadian hydrogen by 2025. In addition, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Stuttgart signed a declaration of cooperation in November 2022 to strengthen their collaboration on sustainable energy and hydrogen research. This relationship was reinforced by the April 2023 visit of German President Walter Steinmeier to UBC MéridaLabs’ Smart Hydrogen Energy District project.

What are the current topics of this year's hy-fcell Canada? Are there any focal points in the exhibition?

The exhibition will focus on hydrogen generation and infrastructure, fuel cell components and systems, their production technology, and application areas for fuel cells and hydrogen technologies, along with research, development and specialized services. The event program includes plenary sessions with political and industry leaders as well as panel discussions with representatives from leading companies and organizations. Various workshops will include experts working together with participants to find solutions to current issues such as roadmaps, hydrogen hubs and commercialization.

What can visitors expect from the conference sessions?

We have confirmed an array of international high-level speakers for the conference. In a varied program, they will share their experiences with interested parties and provide information on the latest technical developments. In a notable panel discussion, everything will revolve around accelerating the upswing of the green hydrogen economy. The “First Nation Energy Leadership” session will showcase and discuss the interests of Indigenous peoples, their Nations, and businesses participating in the emerging hydrogen energy sector. The "Hydrogen Production and Electrolyzers" discussion will focus on electrolysis using carbon-free hydrogen from renewable and nuclear resources to produce clean and economically conscious hydrogen.
